Paul Maloney, Technology Management and Consultancy Limited, undertook important work for the University of Derby in 2007/8/9.  The Higher Education sector has determined that detailed Business Continuity Strategies and Policies need to be put in place to assure and protect business operations in the case of disruption or events that threaten normal business operations.  The University needed to draw on expertise of Business Continuity Management (BCM) to assist its plans and developments.

Paul was employed as a consultant and worked closely with a BCM Task Group during 2007/8/9 to advise on the following:

1. The detail and application of BS25999
2. Development of a University Policy, Strategy and a System for BCM including standard report techniques and paperwork
3. Advice on an initial Business Impact Assessment Exercise
4. Conducted a series of workshops to brief stakeholders across the institution about the concept of BCM, how it applies to HE and methods and approaches to adopt to make BCM practical and manageable.

In addition to this Paul worked very closely with the University’s IT Department to advise on the development and implementation of IT Resilience and Disaster Recovery programmes.

Paul’s expertise and knowledge of BCM was invaluable in enabling the University to establish its policy and strategy.  His approach was impressive in getting to know the business of HE to be able to “talk our language”.  This was used in workshop settings to get across the concepts of BCM as it applies to Universities.  He also steered us to a pragmatic design which will avoid a bureaucratic industry for BCM whilst protecting the business.

As it rolls out its BCM Strategy across the business the University has appointed a dedicated BCM. Paul was part of the selection and appointment process as an external advisor and has actioned some induction with the new appointee.  Paul is a very energetic, focussed professional in the area of BCM.  He is able to apply his expertise in practical settings and to win the confidence of teams he is working with. If it weren’t for his advice and guidance we would not have progressed as far as we have with BCM at the University.
